The Anchorage Guest House

The Anchorage.

Sandra and Ian give you a warm welcome to our home .

The Anchorage, bed and breakfast in Berwick is a grade 2  listed Georgian town  house .The house was built in the late 18 th century by a sea captain, hence the name .The front of the house was carved by Italian stone masons brought over from Italy by the Captain and hopefully taken back to Italy again! Little is known about the early history of the house until Dr Johnston the famous naturalist bought the house in 1819 .Dr Johnston’s life is very well documented . He was a founder of the Berwickshire naturalists club which is still in existence today The house is listed in Pevsner’s guide to historic buildings in Northumberland. The house has been in my family since 1936 and has just been the subject of a 3 year renovation .

We are located in the centre of Berwicks old town , one of the most interesting small towns in Britain. We can help you explore Berwick and the surrounding country side .
